Distinguished name APIs

The distinguished name APIs let a super admin (or a user with sufficient permissions to access these APIs) add, retrieve, update, or delete any distinguished names from an allow list in order to enable communication between clusters or nodes.

Before you can use these APIs to configure the allow list, you must add the following line to opensearch.yml:

plugins.security.nodes_dn_dynamic_config_enabled: true

OpenSearch supports the following distinguished name APIs.

API Description
Create or Update Distinguished Name API Adds or updates the distinguished names in the specified cluster’s or node’s allow list.
Patch Distinguished Names API Updates the distinguished names for one cluster or makes a bulk update across clusters.
Get Distinguished Names API Retrieves the distinguished names in the allow list for one cluster or node or for all clusters and nodes.
Delete Distinguished Name API Deletes all distinguished names in the specified cluster’s or node’s allow list.

Required permissions

The distinguished name APIs are restricted to a super admin. Being mapped to a role listed in plugins.security.restapi.roles_enabled is not sufficient on its own: a user with the all_access role receives 403 Forbidden. To call these APIs, use one of the following approaches:

  • Authenticate with an admin certificate. For more information, see Configuring an admin certificate.
  • Grant a role the restapi:admin/nodesdn cluster permission. The role must also be listed in plugins.security.restapi.roles_enabled, and opensearch.yml must set plugins.security.restapi.admin.enabled to true.

No built-in role includes restapi:admin/nodesdn. A role that contains any restapi:admin permission cannot be created or modified through the Role APIs, so define the role in roles.yml and apply it with securityadmin.sh. For more information, see Applying changes to configuration files.

To prevent a role from using these APIs, disable the NODESDN endpoint for that role using plugins.security.restapi.endpoints_disabled.
